You're right, the community is exactly like that. At least on the forums. Understand that the EVE forums are infested with every known breed of Internet troll as well as a significant number of people who just don't know when to shut up. But don't let that discourage you too much! The EVE community as a whole is actually quite an interesting mix, and there are a lot of friendly and helpful people out there who go out of their way to be team players and assist other people.
If you haven't already, join a corp. You'll find that some of the 0.0 corp are better suited for more experienced players and they may or may not let you in. But there are many others that will be happy to have you. And there are some very fine low-sec and high-sec corp as well that can really help put you on the path to achieving your goals in EVE, whatever those may be.
The combativeness and belligerent attitude you see on display on the forums and in chat is just part of EVE's character. It definitely can be off-putting at times, however, if you stick with it you'll eventually learn to navigate that. There are a couple places on the forum that are generally good for nothing except watching people make fools of themselves. But there is also a ton of useful information here as well. If you want more information and less flaming, stay away from General Discussion, Crime & Punishment, and CAOD. The rest of the forums are pretty much like any other game forum on the Web.
EVE is a great game so don't let the brain-dead drive you away from it. Just learn to be smarter than they are. If, after reading what I've just written, you still feel EVE is too harsh, then it's probably fair to say there's a good chance you won't like it. Many players have a love-hate relationship with EVE, so you're not alone. Join a corp and make some friends and that will make a world of difference.
